The Question That Changes Everything

In a culture obsessed with how — how to get promoted, how to make more money, how to build a personal brand, how to optimize your morning routine — we have collectively neglected the one question that matters more than all of those combined: why?

Why are you pursuing this particular career? Why do you want that promotion? Why does this goal matter to you — not to your parents, not to your peers, not to the invisible audience you imagine judging your life on social media — but to you? What is the fundamental motivation that drives you, that gets you out of bed on the mornings when everything feels impossible, that sustains you through the inevitable setbacks and disappointments that every meaningful career involves?

That is the question at the heart of my book Where is Your Why?: A Formula of Building Blocks to Attain Success. And it is a question that, in my experience, the vast majority of even highly successful professionals have never seriously engaged with. Without a compelling "why," most people give up long before they make a real difference. With a compelling "why," they find reserves of energy and commitment that they didn't know they had.

Block 1: Self-Knowledge

The foundation of everything else is honest, unflinching self-knowledge. What are your genuine strengths — not the strengths you wish you had, but the ones that actually show up when you're at your best? What are your genuine values — not the values that sound impressive on a resume, but the ones that actually guide your behavior when nobody's watching? What are the experiences that have shaped you, for better and for worse?

Most professionals have a surprisingly shallow understanding of themselves. They know their job title, their skills, and their career history. But they haven't done the deeper work of understanding their motivational patterns, their emotional triggers, their habitual responses to stress and conflict, and the unconscious beliefs that shape their behavior. This deeper self-knowledge is the bedrock on which everything else is built.

Block 2: Vision

Once you understand who you are, you can begin to articulate who you want to become and what you want to create in the world. This is your vision — and it needs to be specific, compelling, and deeply personal. Not "I want to be successful," but "I want to build organizations where every person, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to contribute their full potential." Not "I want to make a lot of money," but "I want to create financial freedom that allows me to spend my time on work that matters."

Your vision should be ambitious enough to inspire you and specific enough to guide your daily decisions. It should feel slightly uncomfortable — like it's asking more of you than you're currently capable of delivering. That discomfort is a sign that your vision is big enough to drive genuine growth.

Block 3: Strategy

Vision without strategy is a daydream. Strategy is the bridge between who you are today and who you want to become. It's the set of deliberate choices — about where to focus your energy, which opportunities to pursue and which to decline, how to develop your skills, and how to build your network — that translates your vision into reality.

Effective personal strategy requires the same discipline that effective business strategy demands: clear priorities, honest assessment of competitive advantages and disadvantages, willingness to make trade-offs, and regular evaluation and adjustment based on results.

Block 4: Discipline

This is where most people falter. Not because they lack talent or vision or strategy, but because they lack the daily discipline to execute consistently over long periods of time. Success is not a single dramatic moment. It is the accumulation of thousands of small, consistent actions — showing up when you don't feel like it, doing the hard work when the easy work beckons, maintaining your standards when no one is watching.

Discipline is not glamorous. It doesn't make for compelling social media content. But it is the building block that separates people who dream about success from people who achieve it.

Block 5: Service

The final building block — and the one that elevates mere achievement into genuine significance — is service. The most fulfilled and impactful professionals I've known are not the ones who accumulated the most for themselves. They are the ones who used their success as a platform for contributing to others.

Service doesn't mean sacrificing your own ambitions. It means integrating the wellbeing of others — your team, your organization, your community, your profession — into your definition of success. It means recognizing that the highest form of achievement is not personal accumulation but collective advancement.

Connecting Your "Why" to Your Daily Work
